Class Descriptions

 

Level #1 (NOVICE)

No prerequisites

Introduction to Computers, Part One - $10.50

Course Code – C1

This course, or the equivalent, is a prerequisite to all other courses.  

A 4-lesson course to introduce hardware, software, terminology, Microsoft Windows basics and the use of a mouse and keyboard to control the computer. To accomplish this, you will work with MS/Paint, OpenOffice suite, and various games. Software used for this course is “Microsoft Windows Basics”.  A moderate increase in proficiency will be recognized by the student.

Level #2 (INTERMEDIATE)

 Introduction to Computers, Part Two - $18.00

Course Code – C2

 Prerequisite – Pass “Intro to Computers, Part One” or proficiency exam.

This is a 6-lesson course continuing the lessons learned in C1 by focusing on basic computer fundamentals and software. Using a word processing software program, you will learn how to create, save, access, and delete documents and folders and how to enhance documents. Then you will apply what you learned in the word processing program to other programs that use toolbars, taskbars, icons and commands that are similar in many software programs. Basic computer navigation using the Windows File Management system is also reviewed.  This is an excellent introductory course to gain confidence and learn what a computer can do for you.  It is designed to prepare you for intermediate and advanced courses such as using the Internet and Email, advanced "Microsoft Word", and Creative Design.

Level #3 (ADVANCED)  

 Introduction to Navigating the Internet - $10.50

Course Code – IE

 Prerequisite – Pass “Intro to Computers, Part Two” or proficiency exam.

 A 4-lesson course on the general use of the computer to access the Internet using Microsoft Internet Explorer software.  You will learn the skills necessary to join the 20 million older adults who are already online and become a part of the exciting, fast-growing Internet community, browsing the World Wide Web, using e-mail services, and investigating online discussions.  The course covers signing on to the Internet, sending and receiving email, finding your way around on the “Information Super-Highway” with addresses and search engines, and downloading files of information in your areas of interest.  Attachments to an e-mail message will also be covered.  The Software used for this course is “Microsoft Internet Explorer” and “Microsoft Outlook Express”.

Level #3 (ADVANCED) 

Introduction to Word Processing - $18.00 

Course Code – WP

Prerequisite – Pass “Intro to Computers, Part Two”  or proficiency exam.

 An 8-lesson course covering the general use of Microsoft Word software.  The lessons focus on the techniques of using Microsoft Word for your general correspondence and to create things such as newsletters, envelopes, labels and other documents. You will learn how to set margins, create headers and footers, foot notes, tables for names and addresses, insert graphics, and spell check and print your documents. Merge addresses into a letter, envelope or labels.  The course is intended to help students grow in their ability to enjoy the activity of writing, using the computer as a tool.  You will be given the opportunity to be “creative”.

 Level #3 (ADVANCED)  

Creative Designs - $23.00    

Course Code – CD 

Prerequisite or proficiency test required.

 An 8-lesson course on the general application of graphics using Sierra Print Artist software.  The lessons open up the fun and creative world of making greeting cards, certificates, flyers, signs, banners, calendars and more. The course will show you how to creatively combine textual information with graphics to produce a pleasant looking piece for printing. You will be given the opportunity to exercise your own creativity and complete ten (10) fun projects during the course.

Level #3 (ADVANCED)  

Introduction to Digital Photography - $23.00

Course Code – DP

 Prerequisite or proficiency test required.

An 8-lesson course intended to instruct the student in the processing of digital images "produced by a camera" as well as the use and operation of a digital scanner to digitize a photo for repair or editing, images acquired from multiple sources, using Microsoft Picture It! software.  The student will learn to work with photos, getting rid of “red-eye” or “scratches”, as well as downloading photos or graphics from the Internet, building collages, or simply creating an image for e-mail.

 

Level #3 (ADVANCED)

Introduction to Microsoft Excel 2007 - $23.00

Course Code - EX

Prerequisite or proficiency test required.

An 8 lesson course to teach you the basis of creating and maintaining spreadsheets, how to build workbooks, and format a cell or worksheet. The creation and use of formulas for automatic calculations of summary pages and create charts, adjust cells, columns and rows, add/delete comments, adjust color, and using the fill handle. The use of linking, sorting, splitting and creating pivot tables.
